Kunsthal Rotterdam

The Kunsthal in Rotterdam is one of the icons of modern architecture and is visited every year by large numbers of architecture lovers from all over the world. The Kunsthal Rotterdam is located in Museum Park in the Museumkwartier district directly alongside the Erasmus MC.

The world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas designed the Kunsthal in 1988-1989 in conjunction with the project architect Fuminori Hoshino from the Rotterdam firm of architects OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture). The work immediately attracted wide international attention for such features as its innovative use of material, the position of the entrance and the steep ramps. The Kunsthal was officially opened on 1 November 1992. The robust building houses seven exhibition spaces, a characteristic auditorium and a café with an ambience of its own.

It is not just a building, it is a contemporary work of art full of themes, references and special effects. Each space has its own atmosphere due to the use of various kinds of materials varying from marble and parquet to bare concrete and galvanized steel. Daylight enters the building in various ways through for example matt and clear glass (windows).

The Kunsthal’s auditorium, which was thoroughly renovated in 2014, is suitable for business gatherings and events. The hall is tiered upwards with colorful design seating and can accommodate up to 300 people when set up as a theatre. It can be converted into a smaller space by means of a curtain, when it seats 200. WiFi coverage is available free of charge.
